Travel may still be widely restricted across the globe, but SSI is not going to let that get its divers down. On their innovative travel website, MyDiveGuide, SSI is highlighting the best local dive sites in weekly installments from countries around the world. August took divers to the most popular dive sites in Turkey, Austria, and Switzerland. Throughout September, look for dive sites to be highlighted in Germany, Netherlands, and Italy. In October, MyDiveGuide will explore the top local dive sites in the USA, Croatia, France, and Australia.
With the inability to travel, most divers have had to re-think the way they do diving. Those who have always associated diving with hopping on a plane and heading toward warm, tropical water have had their eyes opened up to a whole new world of diving right in their own backyard. With their local dive site series, SSI hopes to further stimulate local diving to keep the dive industry up and running.
In a recent blog post, SSI shares six ways to increase bottom time when travel is hard:
- Explore Local Spots – advertise to your customers the local dive sites your staff visits on regularly.
- Discover New Sites – encourage your customers (and staff) to get out there and discover new dive sites. Exploring is what diving is all about anyway, right?
- Expand Expectations – if your customers are used to only diving on vacation, surrounded by warm, crystal clear waters exploding with life, help them see a whole new world of diving. Show them that every underwater environment offers something unique and special.
- Stay Connected – keeping your customers connected with one-another will keep them diving. Grow your diving community by hosting dive events and activities.
- Expand Dive Gear & Knowledge – diving throughout the year may require your customers to invest in warmer wetsuits or other gear. They may also need additional training to suit the local diving environments like Night & Limited Visibility for those darker quarry dives or Drift & Current Diving for swift-moving river dives.

Diving may look a bit different now for your customers than it usually does, but don’t let that keep them at home and on their couch. Instead of leading them on your annual liveaboard trip to Indonesia, plan lots of fun and different local diving opportunities. Tell customers to dust off their gear, rent some cylinders, and take them to explore all the nearby dive sites they never knew existed.
