Responders in Action 2024

Emergency First Response® would like to congratulate the following Emergency Responders who put their training into action when called upon to offer assistance.

In England

Emergency Responders: Simon Midgley, Darren Hector, Julian Facer

Action: Hector heard a shout while providing surface support to Midgley and his group of divers. Midgley surfaced and assisted in getting the unconscious and non-breathing victim out of the water, then Midgley and Hector alternated providing chest compressions while Facer provided rescue breaths. The group quickly cut the victim’s wetsuit at the chest to allow a fourth rescuer to operate the AED. The group provided CPR with oxygen administration and AED for 55 minutes before EMS arrived; they then handed the rescue over to paramedics. In the debrief, the rescuer operating the AED, a medical professional, said that having people present who were trained in CPR had allowed him to take a step back and mentally run through some checklists to make sure everything that needed to be happening was happening. Tragically, despite the rescuers’ efforts, the victim did not survive.

EFR Instructors: Ian Angell (#616969), Jason Sockett (#608181), Simon Potter (#20478)

In Malta

Emergency Responder: Walker Embrey

Action: Embrey was scuba diving with a group on a shipwreck. Upon surfacing at the exit point, he heard the guide of another group calling for help. Embrey immediately instructed a bystander on the surface to call emergency medical services before swimming over to offer help in towing the victim to shore while removing the victim’s equipment. Once ashore, while the dive center staff began CPR on the victim, Embrey exited the water, took off his dive gear then cycled into the CPR effort while they waited for EMS to arrive. He also kept a timeline for the medics when he was not helping with CPR. EMS took over the rescue when they arrived, but sadly, the victim died.

In the USA

Emergency Responder: David Robledo

Action: Late one night Robledo, a police officer with the Miccosukee Police Department in Miami-Dade, Florida, was on patrol when he noticed tire marks leading toward a canal embankment. After stopping his patrol vehicle, he was able to hear a person screaming for help. Using his flashlight, he located the person holding on to a tree branch on the other side of the canal, an area in the heart of the Florida Everglades. Despite the likely presence of alligators and pythons, Robledo donned his rescue rig and entered the canal, swimming to the other side. Robledo rescued the man, swimming him back to the other side of the canal and taking him out of the water to await emergency medical services to check the man for any signs of injury.
