Building an active and inclusive community is key to the growth and success of dive businesses across the globe.
“The Women in Diving Initiative, and its flagship annual event PADI Women’s Dive Day, was identified as a solution to increase the inclusivity and belonging of females in the dive industry,” says Katie Thompson, PADI’s Senior Director, Environment & Sustainability. “When we dove into the data a decade ago, we knew that we could do something to break down barriers and make diving more welcoming for women. PADI Dive Centers, Resorts, and Instructors all around the world have made this movement their own, and there are more women of all ages diving today than there were ever before.”
Establishing an active female dive community not only benefits the women involved but also brings significant advantages to dive shops and the dive industry at large. Here are six reasons why fostering a vibrant community of women divers is important.
1. Expanding Your Customer Base
Women represent a significant portion of potential divers. By marketing to and connecting with women, potential female divers are more inclined to feel encouraged and welcomed to learn to dive. For example, in Hawaii, USA, Dive Kauai Scuba Center is offering a free event for women to kick-start their diving experience on Women’s Dive Day. By actively promoting female participation, dive businesses can attract a broader audience, leading to increased dive activity, more course enrollments, and higher sales.
2. Empowering More Confident Divers
By prominently offering continuing education courses, like Rescue Diver and specialties, PADI Members can encourage female divers to achieve higher levels of proficiency. These courses not only enhance skills and safety knowledge but also boost self-confidence and leadership abilities. Dive shops that invest in the continuous education of their female divers foster a culture of excellence and empowerment. As women progress through advanced certifications, they become more self-assured divers, inspiring others and contributing to a more skilled and dynamic diving community.
3. Encouraging Female Leadership
“Females in leadership roles at a PADI Dive Center or Resort, or females holding a professional credential, inclusive of PADI Divemaster through to the highest level of PADI Course Director, raise the visibility and representation of women globally in the sport,” says Thompson. “Collectively they serve as vital role models for the next generation and are critical to inspiring more women to start diving.” This representation is crucial for breaking down gender barriers and inspiring future female dive leaders. To this end, UK-based Ocean Turtle Diving is hosting an all-female Instructor Development Course this July in Spain, followed by a bespoke all-female PADI Instructor Exam on PADI Women’s Dive Day. 4. Promoting Inclusivity and Diversity
Creating a welcoming space for female divers promotes inclusivity and diversity, which are essential values in any business. An inclusive community ensures that everyone, regardless of gender, age, race, background, or ability, feels comfortable and supported. This positive environment not only attracts more women but also enhances the overall reputation of the dive shop and our industry. Divers from diverse backgrounds bring varied perspectives and experiences, enriching the entire diving community.
5. Enhancing Social and Learning Opportunities
Women often seek communities where they can share experiences, learn from one another, and build lasting friendships. An active female dive community provides these social and learning opportunities, making diving a more enjoyable and enriching experience. Dive shops can organize women-only dive trips, workshops, and social activities (like PADI Women’s Dive Day events) to foster camaraderie and peer support. This sense of belonging can lead to higher retention rates and long-term engagement.
6. Developing the Next Generation of Divers
Fostering an active female dive community also plays a critical role in the future of diving by getting kids and families involved. Women often serve as key influencers within their families, and their enthusiasm for diving can inspire children and partners to take up the sport. Dive shops that offer family-friendly and youth programs can create a nurturing environment where diving becomes a cherished family activity. In Switzerland, TSK Zürich is hosting an intro dive for kids on Women’s Dive Day. And in the Philippines, Cebu Fun Divers is offering 50% off the PADI Discover Scuba Diving (hosted by female instructors) for moms who would like to try diving. By encouraging women to dive – and to dive with their families – dive shops not only secure a loyal customer base but also help cultivate a lifelong passion for diving in young adventurers, ensuring the continued growth and vitality of the diving community.
By prioritizing these efforts, dive businesses can help ensure sustainable growth and success, and create a welcoming, thriving environment where everyone can explore and protect the ocean.
